Orange Arena (Bratislava)
Orange Arena (oficially known as Ondrej Nepela Arena; previously also known as T-Com Arena or Samsung Arena) is going to be the main venue during the 2011 IIHF World Championship in Slovakia. This “grandpa” of an arena (its history started already in 1940) is currently undergoing a massive reconstruction (started on April 23rd, 2009), which will make it ready for the championship. Goals of the reconstruction are to increase the total seating capacity to 10,000 visitors (7,704 tickets will be sold to the public), build a new training hall, increase visitors’ security and improve their experience by removing support columns, which were blocking the view, install the most modern technology and create 761 parking spaces in underground garage. The reconstruction is scheduled to end on November 30th, 2010.
During the 2011 IIHF World Championship the Orange Arena (Ondrej Nepela Arena) will be used for the Pre-Round, Qualifying Round, all four Quarterfinals, Semi-Finals, Bronze Medal-Game, Final and Relegation.
The history of the Orange Arena (Ondrej Nepela Arena) started already in 1940, when it was opened as the first public ice rink (at that time open-air). In 1948-49 concrete tribunes were built around the ice rink, which provided space for 11,000 standing visitors. Due to Figure Skating European Championship in 1958 the ice rink was roofed and additional 4,000 places for seating visitors were created. The last major reconstruction took place in 1990-92, when Bratislava was supposed to host the Ice Hockey World Championship.
