Getting to Bratislava
Bratislava is centrally located in the middle of Europe. You can reach it by any means of transportation – by car, plane, bus, train or boat. It is not far from three large European capitals – Vienna, Budapest and Prague. On this page you will find some useful information regarding ways how to get to Bratislava.
Bratislava is connected to the rest of Europe with highways, which form part of international routes. To get to Bratislava from the Czech republic and Hungary, follow highway D2. To reach Bratislava from Vienna and Austria, use the Ost-Autobahn E60 and E58. When accessing Bratislava from the East (Eastern Slovakia, Ukraine, etc.), take the highway D2.
Bratislava has one international airport – Milan Rastislav Štefánik Airport (Bratislava Airport), which is used mainly by Irish low-cost airline Ryanair, Slovak airline Danube Wings, Czech Airlines and charter companies. Ryanair currently operates 21 routes (eg. London Stansted, Rome Ciampino, Paris – Beauvais, Milano Bergamo, Dublin, Barcelona). Danube Wings flies for example to Basel and Košice, while Czech Airlines connects the city with Prague. Russian Aeroflot might re-open the Moscow route in the future. The airport has a nice new departures terminal, which replaces the old one prepared for demolition and construction of the 2nd phase of airport reconstruction.
When looking for flights to Bratislava, consider flying to the near-by Vienna International Airport. Not only are these two cities the closest capitals in Europe, but Vienna also offers many more worldwide connections and international airlines (Austrian Airlines, Lufthansa, British Airways, etc.).
As the Capital of Slovak Republic, Bratislava is reachable by bus from many European cities. Probably the most common are the EuroLines buses, which go for example to London, Paris, Brussels, Frankfurt, Prague, Budapest, Geneve and other cities. These buses are air-conditioned, with a bathroom, TV and other standard facilities. Bus schedules can be found on this website (switch to English in the lower right corner).
Hopping on a train to Bratislava
Bratislava is connected by railway with various European cities (Prague, Vienna, Moscow, Berlin, Budapest, etc). Most of the international trains arrive to Bratislava’s Main Train Station, however some regular trains from Vienna arrive to the Petržalka Train Station. For train schedules, try this website (switch to English in the lower right corner).
Beware of the taxis standing in front of the Main Bus Terminal, Main Train Station and Petržalka Station in Bratislava! These are private taxis, which can (and will) charge you as much as 20 € for a 5-minute ride to city centre. Instead of taking one of those taxis, call Taxi Trend at +421 903 216 302 or Taxi Bratislava at +421 903 768 666. It might take a few minutes for them to pick you up, but you can be sure they will charge their standard fees (minimum charge of approx. 3.50 € and then around 0.50 € per kilometer).
Navigate the Danube to Bratislava
The Danube river flows directly through Bratislava, which makes it possible to reach Bratislava from Vienna (Austria) and Budapest (Hungary). The best way to reach Bratislava by boat from Vienna is to take the Twin City Liner – high-speed catamaran connecting city center of the two capitals at the speed of 32.5 knots. In Vienna it docks at Schwedenplatz, while in Bratislava it docks in the Personal Port (approx. 5 minutes from the Old Town).
